Carnival in the Mexican Caribbean

by user

This party is very loved by both, locals and visitors, as it is a perfect setting to have fun and enjoy.

Every year the streets of different cities and towns in the Yucatan peninsula are filled with color, rhythm and joy to welcome the Carnival festivities.

It usually takes place in February, however, the dates change every year since they are linked to Easter days. It is a celebration that spans several weeks since the festivities begin with the presentations of the candidates for the king and queen of the carnival, costume contests, comparsas (dance groups) competition and finally with the election of the king and queen; however, the big party always begins on a Saturday, in which the comparsas go out to dance in the streets to the rhythm of salsa, bachata and reggaeton (among other Latin rhythms) while they wear their costumes full of colors and shine, to later continue to a parade where everyone is in a good mood and partying, and then finally conclude the night with concerts in the main square.

Sounds like fun, right? The best part is that it is repeated again on Sunday and Tuesday, and it finally ends on Ash Wednesday with the burning of Juan Carnaval (Don’t be scared! They don’t burn anyone, it’s just something symbolic).

If you like to party and the sound of tropical rhythms, this is definitely for you. Don’t think about it twice and reserve your vacation for the following year to come on these dates!
