Shopping in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is an incredible place full of multiple activities that can occupy your day. However, one of the activities that we most recommend on the island is to take an afternoon to lose yourself in the many shops that you can find.

When you walk around downtown, particularly on Hidalgo Street (the most important pedestrian street on the island) you will come across many options for handcrafts and souvenirs of Mexican art and folklore. You will be able to find everything from silver and jade jewelry, onyx objects, toys, colorful classic ceramic skulls from the famous Day of the Dead, rugs, sarapes, blown glass, t-shirts, hats and many more artifacts that you can take as a souvenir or give to your loved ones.
It is important to mention that although you can find many of these items in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, the prices on the island tend to be lower.

On that same street, you may also find unique art galleries such as L’Mento Art and Aztlan, which showcase beautiful pieces of carved wood, high-quality decorative masks, classic handicrafts from other states of the country, as well as paintings, postcards, drawings and photographs that represent the life and beauty of Isla Mujeres. In the first gallery, you can even commission a unique piece and watch the moment they it’s made!

On the other hand, if what you are looking for is to adopt a more Caribbean dressing style, you will also find various clothing stores to buy swimsuits, dresses, shirts, skirts, shoes and hats that will give you a very tropical style. Our favorite stores are Jenny Penny and Diosa Tropical.

Of course, the downtown area is not the only place where you can go shopping, practically every beach club you go to has its own little cart where you can do your shopping, and you can even lie on the beach and various sellers of sarongs, bags, bracelets and necklaces will approach you to offer you their products.

A very important aspect that should be mentioned is that it is common to find shops that sell corals, starfish, seashells and other marine creatures. Please don’t buy them! They are very beautiful but due to their overexploitation, they are increasingly scarce on the seabed and it is our duty to protect them.

As you can see, there are several options for shopping on the island, but it is important to note that these mentions are only a small part of everything you can find. Thanks for taking an interest in this article! By buying here you help to improve the economy of the locals at the same time that you take a beautiful souvenir with you.
